FREEHOLD or CONDO – WHAT’S BEST FOR YOU?!

FREEHOLD OR CONDO? OTTAWA REAL ESTATE - CHRIS STEEVES - HOME BUYER

Should we buy a freehold or a condo?   Often a difficult decision for many home-buyers. 

If you’re getting ready to buy a home, and are undecided about which way to go, then here is a quick rundown on the pros and cons of each.   I’ll outline the general differences so you can make a more informed decision on whether to go with FREEHOLD or CONDO in Ottawa, Ontario  🙂

Here’s the 3 main points to consider before making a purchase: 

1. PRICE/COST – How much do they cost to buy and to maintain?    Freeholds are generally more expensive to purchase, but less expensive to maintain over time.

2. LIFESTYLE – What sort of lifestyle do you want? Location, amenities, size, etc?    You may not be able to get the location you want unless you buy condo.   And maybe you want less upkeep and routine maintenance, at which point condos can be a better option.  

3. INVESTMENT – Which one makes the better investment; freehold or condo?   The general rule, for Ottawa and most Canadian cities, is that a freehold will appreciate faster and more consistently over time.
