Here’s a great article running through the cost of building a new home in Ottawa. There often appears to be an assumption that these developers/builders are making fortunes (and yes, on some projects I imagine they do), but for the most part, margins are extremely thin. A few mistakes along the way, and a developer can end up in trouble. Another frustrating point is the government and their astronomical fees. In the real estate industry, I run into these government cash-grabs in almost every aspect of the business.
